Landing Your First Role

The 30-day action plan

This four-week plan organizes preparation and applications. Adapt it to your experience and available time; it is not a promise of an offer within a month.

Week 1: Foundation

• Complete the Web3 Fundamentals course (you are reading it)
• Set up MetaMask and make a test transaction
• Create or update your GitHub profile
• Register an ENS name (yourname.eth)
• Follow 20 Web3 companies on Twitter that you find interesting

Week 2: Build

• Complete one small project (deploy a contract, build a Dune dashboard, or write 3 educational threads)
• Push your project to GitHub with a clear README
• Contribute to one open-source repo (even a documentation fix counts)
• Start writing about what you are learning

Week 3: Network

• Join 5 protocol Discord servers for companies you want to work at
• Introduce yourself in their community channels
• Complete one bounty on Gitcoin or Dework
• Engage with hiring managers' posts on Twitter (thoughtful replies, not spam)

Week 4: Apply

• Apply to 10-15 relevant roles on Web3 job boards
• Customize each application - mention the product and your specific experience
• Follow up in Discord or Twitter DMs (one polite message, not repeated pings)
• Prepare for interviews: use the product, study the docs

Application tips

Do: Mention you have used the product. Link to your GitHub, Dune, or portfolio. Keep it concise.

Do not: Write a generic cover letter. Mention you want "exposure to crypto." Apply without looking at the product.

Use a product or read its documentation before applying when practical. Refer to a specific feature or problem that relates to your experience, without pretending to have used something you have not.

After the offer

1. Understand your compensation: base salary (usually in fiat or stablecoins) + token grants (vesting schedule, cliff period)
2. Set up security: hardware wallet for any token compensation
3. Read the protocol documentation cover to cover
4. Join internal channels and introduce yourself
5. Ask for a 30-60-90 day plan from your manager

Before starting a new role

Confirm the written offer, employment or contractor status, pay arrangements, reporting line, and onboarding requirements. Keep copies of the terms you accept.
