About the event

Ethereum and Ethereum Classic were once the same chain, until the DAO hard fork in 2016 sent them down separate paths. Ethereum later moved to Proof of Stake, while Classic stayed with Proof of Work. Ten years on, ETC enters its second decade, and every chain now faces new threats from quantum computers and AI.

We're a 15-minute walk from Ethereum Cypherpunk Congress #3 (https://congress.web3privacy.info/), and we invite you to this casual evening after it closes, the night before Devcon 8 opens, to pull up a chair and talk with Ethereum Classic developers and contributors.

Who It's For

Builders on any EVM chain, node runners and miners, Congress and Devcon people, and anyone curious about Ethereum Classic.

Let's Talk About

We think ETC, the EVM chain with the greatest hash rate, is going to make a comeback.

Quantum computers threaten the elliptic-curve signatures every chain uses today, but ETC's consensus rests on hash-based Proof of Work, which shouldn't need to be migrated. Mining a block takes real hardware and energy, and there are no validator keys to steal or forge. Wallets are a different story, and we still need to figure out post-quantum signatures for ETC accounts, looking to Ethereum's research on this for inspiration.

Coming straight from the Cypherpunk Congress, we also thought it would be interesting to talk about the cypherpunk ideas ETC was built on, like censorship resistance and protocol neutrality, and about EVM symbiosis, since ETC and Ethereum share the EVM and the same contracts, tools and builders can work on both.

We think ETC is an underdog with a bright future, carried through ten years by people who stayed for principles that never die.
