The Mt. Gox rehabilitation trustee extended the deadline for creditor repayments by a year, from Oct. 31, 2026, to Oct. 31, 2027, after a Japanese court approved the change. Trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi set out the new deadline in an Oct. 16 notice.
The extension covers three categories under the rehabilitation plan: Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment. It is the fourth consecutive yearly extension since the trustee first aimed to finish distributions in October 2023, according to CryptoSlate.
Kobayashi said the trustee has largely completed those repayments for creditors who finished the necessary procedures and did not run into problems, apart from certain types of payment. Many creditors have still not been paid because they have not completed the procedures for receiving repayments, he said, while a considerable number have not received funds because of issues that came up during the repayment process. The trustee said it is desirable to reach those creditors to the extent reasonably practicable.
The notice was posted on the Mt. Gox website on Oct. 16 and labeled an English translation for reference purposes. It directed creditors to the claims system for further questions and said the FAQ page is available without logging in, though the trustee said logged-in inquiries are easier to verify and handle because identity checks are simpler.
The trustee said the additional year would let it make the remaining repayments to the extent reasonably practicable. The notice gives no timetable for individual distributions and no updated count of affected creditors.
The process stretches back to the collapse of the Tokyo exchange. Mt. Gox filed for bankruptcy in February 2014 after reporting the loss of about 850,000 Bitcoin, CryptoSlate reported. The exchange once handled a large share of global Bitcoin trading, and its failure left thousands of customers pursuing compensation through Japanese insolvency proceedings, the publication said. Mt. Gox later entered civil rehabilitation, which set up a framework for returning recovered assets to eligible creditors through cryptocurrency distributions and cash payments.
Distributions resumed in July 2024, when the trustee began sending Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash through designated exchanges including Kraken and Bitstamp. By March 2025, more than 19,500 creditors had received Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, according to an earlier trustee announcement that CryptoSlate cited. CryptoSlate reported that the exchange payouts followed payments in July and August 2024 and further settlements between January and March 2025.
That March 2025 update listed requirements for further transfers, including account verification, corrections to creditor information, arrangements for exchanges to accept the assets and security checks. Those steps require coordination among claimants, the trustee and the designated exchanges, which can hold up payments even after a creditor submits repayment details.
Under the current arrangements, some creditors receive Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash directly through the exchanges, while others receive cash from the sale of recovered cryptocurrency.
Kobayashi directed creditors who have not been paid to submit questions through the Mt. Gox online rehabilitation claims system at claims.mtgox.com. He asked them to log in before contacting the trustee so their identities can be verified, and said inquiries sent outside the system may be harder to process. He also warned that the volume of questions could delay responses.
Creditors are still waiting to learn when their outstanding claims will be settled. The trustee has not said how much of the recovered estate remains to be distributed or how many claims are unresolved. CryptoSlate said the repeated postponements have left some former customers waiting more than a decade for assets they have not been able to reach since the exchange closed.
The deadline now runs to the end of October 2027. Claims that are confirmed and processed before then would still be paid under the rehabilitation plan, while any claims still incomplete at that point would depend on the trustee's ability to finish the work within the approved schedule.
