Coinbase Rebrands Base App Back to Coinbase Wallet

Coinbase has renamed its standalone Base App back to Coinbase Wallet, consolidating its self-custodial software products under its primary wallet brand after a year-long experiment with separate application naming. The company announced the brand unification in an official product update.

The transition reverts an experimental branding strategy introduced to highlight Coinbase's Ethereum Layer-2 network, Base. During the standalone branding period, user feedback indicated confusion between the underlying L2 blockchain protocol and the self-custodial client software used to access it. By returning to the Coinbase Wallet name, the application maintains explicit support for multi-chain assets, including Solana, Bitcoin, and Ethereum L2 ecosystems, rather than appearing tied exclusively to Base.

Coinbase confirmed that existing user account keys, recovery phrases, transaction histories, and asset balances remain completely unaffected by the interface update.

Product consolidation and multi-chain UX

The decision to consolidate application branding reflects broader UX challenges across Web3 self-custody products. As layer-2 networks proliferate, end users often struggle to distinguish between network infrastructure, decentralized applications, and custodial wallet providers.

Coinbase Wallet will continue serving as the primary entry point for interaction with the Base ecosystem, integrating native gasless transactions, smart wallet passkeys, and integrated dApp browsing. However, product management noted that maintaining a single recognized wallet brand improves user trust and reduces phishing risks associated with lookalike app store listings.

The updated application build is rolling out across iOS and Android app stores, replacing the Base App listing with updated Coinbase Wallet branding and multi-chain feature highlights.
