The Team: CoinDesk Media Engineering

The CoinDesk Media Engineering Team builds and optimizes the digital touchpoints that connect millions of global readers to the digital asset economy. Our mission is to ensure seamless, real-time access to breaking journalism, multimedia, and market intelligence for millions of readers worldwide. We are responsible for the architecture, development, and optimization of coindesk.com, the CoinDesk mobile applications, and the high-availability services layer behind both.

Key Responsibilities

Autonomous Problem Discovery: Spot critical gaps and unassigned challenges across our architecture before they impact users. You take immediate initiative to design and deliver robust, lasting solutions.
Technical Direction & Standards: Proactively set and drive technical direction, architectural standards, and engineering excellence across the media stack. You balance near-term execution with sustainable, long-term system health.
Force Multiplication & Mentorship: Actively raise the technical bar for the engineers around you. You share context openly, provide thoughtful code reviews, and eliminate knowledge silos so no single person becomes a bottleneck.
End-to-End Delivery Excellence: Own complex features from concept to production. You collaborate directly with product managers and designers on scoping, steer deployment, and maintain production reliability, performance, and security.
Full-Stack Execution: Architect and ship resilient functionality across our web surface, mobile apps, and services layer. You build clean, maintainable systems with Next.js, React 19, TypeScript, and modern backend services.
AI-Native Engineering: Leverage AI tools as a standard part of how you design, build, and optimize software. We use Claude Code, Open Code, and open-source models daily. You champion internal AI tooling that accelerates workflows for product managers, designers, and editorial staff.
Safe Release & Operational Governance: Champion progressive delivery practices using feature flags in LaunchDarkly. You build dependable CI/CD pipelines and production observability so the team can deploy often with complete confidence.

What You'll Bring

Lead-Level Track Record: 7 to 8 years of experience shipping production software. You demonstrate verified end-to-end ownership of at least one complex, high-traffic production system from initial design through maturity.
Full-Stack Ecosystem Mastery: Deep hands-on authority across modern web and backend technologies. You bring proven expertise in React, Next.js, Node.js, TypeScript, RESTful APIs, and content management platforms.
Web Performance & Architecture Expertise: In-depth knowledge of Next.js, server-side rendering (SSR), and advanced caching patterns. You have a track record of tuning Core Web Vitals to deliver immediate page responsiveness at scale.
Quality as a Feature: A disciplined commitment to automated testing across unit, integration, and end-to-end suites with tools like Playwright and Maestro. Automated testing is your default standard, never an afterthought.
Cross-Functional Partnership: Strong communication skills with an appetite for working in a small, direct team. You move easily between deep technical debates and collaborative working sessions alongside product managers, designers, and newsroom partners.
DevSecOps & Resiliency Mindset: Practical experience establishing automated CI/CD pipelines and embedding security best practices across client and server boundaries. You manage production risks with feature flags and actionable telemetry.
Large-Scale Publishing Platforms: Proven background designing or maintaining high-volume consumer platforms or media properties with tens of millions of monthly impressions.

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications

Architectural Pruning & Simplification: Proven experience deprecating and decommissioning legacy infrastructure and services, leaving codebases leaner and easier to maintain.
Mobile Application Development: Hands-on experience building or maintaining production mobile applications using React Native and Expo.
Modern Runtimes & High-Speed Datastores: Exposure to alternative execution runtimes like Bun and Elysia, along with high-throughput caching in Redis.
Identity & CMS Platforms: Familiarity with modern authentication protocols using Auth0, alongside structured headless CMS architectures like Sanity.
Monetisation, Analytics & Cloud Tooling: Familiarity with Google Ad Manager, Stripe billing, HubSpot, Amplitude, and Google Cloud Platform services with Terraform.
